Goals.

Creative application of studied theoretical concepts and principles in the process of structural design in architecture. Testing of an integrated approach and specific design methodology.

Assignment.

The task of designing an architectural structure, in the thematic and typological sense, is a continuation of the research started with the literature analysis. The spatial framework of the design project is the Summer Stage at Topčider in Belgrade. Through design research, we tested the opportunity of applying origami methodology for shaping and constructing architectural structures. Origami an ancient Japanese art/skill/process of folding paper into diverse shapes in recent decades has become relevant for other disciplines and the basis of various artistic and technical proposals thanks to the developments in mathematics and computer technologies. The process of folding the surface (a piece of paper) was used in the design to obtain structural shapes. Especially interesting was the rigid origami technique, an origami branch which deals with folding structures composed of rigid plates/sheets joined by hinges.

The assignment was implemented in three phases: _ phase 1 - geometry analysis _ phase 2 - intervention proposal and model research _ phase 3 - elaboration of the design of the structural system. For each of the phases, we defended goals, tasks, results, presentation materials, timelines for implementation, literature and resources for work. The entire educational process was carried out online. The works were documented within digital student portfolios set up in the MS Office 365 Teams | Class Notebook using a variety of presentation techniques - diagrams, textual explanations and comments, sketches, technical drawings, 3D models, montages, mockups, small scale prototypes, photographs, videos, and etc.

Phase I : Geometry Analysi.

In Phase 1, we analyzed geometric relations and drew conclusions regarding forms and possibilities of their application. The task was focused on regular tessellations that have the ability to be developed in a plane. For a given topic, students in small groups, examined the basic units that generate folds - polygon generators, the principles of their connection in series and mashes - folding patterns, and through models they practically examined pattern foldability.
