academician Đorđe Zloković

1927-2017

Academician Đorđe Zloković graduated from the Department of Architecture at the Technical Faculty (1951) and from the Structural Department at the Faculty of Civil Engineering (1955) at the University of Belgrade. He defended his doctorate of technical sciences at the Faculty of Architecture, University Belgrade (1961).

His study visits to Paris, Moscow, London, Munich, and the USA contributed to his professional and scientific specialization.

He worked at the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade from 1958 to 1992. After retirement, he directed and lectured at the postgraduate course: Structural Systems in Architecture. He was also a lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering in Niš. He gave lectures at the faculties of architecture in Turin in Moscow, at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Moscow, at Imperial College in London, at the Faculty of Agriculture in Belgrade.

Since 1980, he has been a member of the Architecture, Urban Planning and Spatial Planning Commission of the Department of Social Sciences of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU). He was elected as the corresponding member of the SANU (Department of Technical Sciences) in 1985 and as a full-time member in 1994. He actively participated in the work of SANU by performing numerous functions.

His scientific work was oriented on the mathematical modeling in mechanics. He developed new mathematical methods in structural theory and design. In the early 1970s, he formulated an original mathematical method named "Group Supermatric Procedure." He published papers in the field of modular coordination, prestressed suspension structures, spatial structures, optimization in the selection and design of structures, prefabrication, and construction technology. He was a member of the Editorial Board of the journal "Architecture and Urbanism" (1967-1970) and editor of special issues on the building's structures and bridges. He was head and participant of several scientific projects. Postgraduate studies based on his monograph were introduced at the Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine, Department of Civil Engineering in London, the UK, in 1989.

As an architect, engineer, and constructor, he designed many buildings, including Sports halls in Belgrade, Niš, and Podgorica. He was the author of three patent solutions. He was a consultant on the construction of the St. Sava Temple in Vračar, Belgrade (1984-2000), and in the period from 1995 to 2000, he was a chairman of the Construction Advisory Commission.

He received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Serbian Chamber of Engineers (2008), the award of Prof. dr Vojislav K. Stojanović, for outstanding results in research work (2008), the Seventh July Prize of the Republic of Serbia (1980), the October Prize of Liberation of the City of Niš (1974), and the Order of St Sava of the First Degree (1994).
